American Airlines joins Alaska Airlines in offering seasonal flights from Palm Springs.
Palm Springs residents looking to spend some time “deep in the heart of Texas” in coming months now will have a new option for doing just that.
A Palm Springs International Airport spokesperson announced Thursday that American Airlines is adding seasonal flights between PSP and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The flights will operate daily starting on Nov. 17 and initially be available through Nov. 29. Service will then resume on Dec. 15 and continue through May 4.
American will become the second airline at PSP to serve Austin, joining Alaska Airlines which operates a seasonal service that is set to resume Friday.
An American Airlines official said in a statement that the additional flights are “a direct response to the demand we saw in 2021.” The official added that the new flights mean customers will also be able to access new connections through the Austin airport.
American will operate the route on a dual-class Embraer 175 aircraft offering Wi-Fi and 44 regular cabin seats and 20 seats in the cabin with additional legroom. The planes also will include 12 first-class seats.
Airport spokesperson Daniel Meier said there are no plans to continue the service beyond May 4 for now but that the service could be extended on a seasonal or even permanent basis if there is demand for it.
“We hope that our community supports the route,” he said.
Meier added that Austin is a focus city for American Airlines, meaning that it has many flights serving it but does not consider it a hub. The addition of service to Austin will give American customers more connection opportunities to cities in the eastern part of the country not served by non-stop flights from Palm Springs, he said.
The addition comes as the airport has been seeing months of record-setting passenger traffic.
On Tuesday, the airport announced it was expecting its busiest Thanksgiving travel period ever with more than 30,000 people expected to fly out of the airport in the Thanksgiving Wednesday through Sunday period, a 20% increase over last year.
The new Austin flight joins existing year-around American flights to Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix and a seasonal flight to Chicago.
